Whilst staying in Benodet a visit to Quimper, the cultural heart of Finsitere, is an absolute “must-do” for any visitor to this area. This charming medieval town is located just 15 minutes drive from the resort of Benodet. The Rivers O’det and Steir pass through the city and are crossed by many bridges, beautifully be-decked with a wonderful array of flower boxes all season long. The O’det then continues onto Benodet, where its’ estuary meets the sea. Why not take a relaxing boat trip from Benodet marina and enjoy the views of the forests and chateaux as you gently travel towards Quimper? For those looking for adventure, there is also the option to kayak the 16km instead.O’det
This thriving city has much to offer for a cultural day out, including its magnificent cathedral, regarded as the best example of Gothic religious architecture in the area. This impressive building is set at the heart of the city, with its plaza surrounded by restaurants and bustling cafes, you will find no shortage of places to eat. Explore the narrow streets with their half-timbered houses, here you will find many creperies, enjoy a savoury or sweet crêpe, ideally accompanied with a glass of refreshing Breton cider. Adjacent to the cathedral is the Musée Départmental Breton; this museum will reveal the history, art and culture of this legendry region and includes a fine collection of traditional Breton costume and furniture.Quimper
There is plenty of shopping to be enjoyed whether in the small boutiques in the city centre, or the enormous hypermarkets situated on the outskirts of the city. Our favourites include Geant and Carrefour. There is also a huge Decathlon that caters for every sport you can imagine; a great place to pick up wetsuits and body boards for the beach. The weekly Quimper market take place each Wednesday and Saturday, ensure you get here early to secure a parking space.
The Festival de Cornouaille is an annual celebration of all things Breton and is held each July in Quimper. More details about this event can be found at the Tourist Office and the live music events are well worth a visit.
